novembre ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- waves of people, waves of children the internship is amazing. i won't get school credit for it, but i don't mind spending 16+ hours weekly at a nonprofit that helps kids get excited about school and writing. for the first few hours on the first day i sat in the back as a field trip of ten year olds in matching uniforms collectively wrote a story about an alien collie and an evil santa who engage in a comedy standoff on mars. because mars is a neutral planet. at the end of the field trip i could pick out the noisemakers, the fidgety hyper troublemakers from the rest, and i plunked myself on the couch between the loudest. we talked about wrestling until the story illustrator walked over and convinced the kids that he could draw their perfect likenesses if they'd only hold a pose for five minutes. it worked. when the kids were ushered out, a small boy named kevin grabbed my hand and wouldn't let go. he explained the entire plot to me as i led him to the door. and then the drop-in tutoring began. 3:50 am - 09.08.05 ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
