novembre ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- home search yesterday we drove through different neighborhoods searching for for rent signs. sat in the running car and called the most promising windows. we looked at apartments today, gingerly stepping through other peoples' bedrooms, imagining our knives on their chopping blocks. my elephant figurines on that little ledge; her couch where their futon sat. what colors do you like? anything except purple. we toured a brown thatched dome. a literal dome; the structure arched and met in the middle, if we lived there we'd have to nickname our apartment the tit. hey, you want to come over and hang out at the tit? the building that took our breath was covered in ivy crawling up its art deco sides. its hallways were long and dim. the landlord bowed us through the high-ceilinged living room into a walk-in closet, complete with window, shelves, and built-in desk. nk and i gasped audibly, grabbed at each others' sides. and it has a pantry! and a linen closet! we met the building manager, an ancient eastern european artist with bright pink hair. cooking soup and wearing dickies, her arthritic hands shook as she waved to us. the landlord took us to the roof and we could see all of oakland. i imagined lawn chairs, a barbeque, her herb garden and one bright little apartment filled with the most intricate hiding places for my heart. i am leaving the lake for blocks hedged in by pine trees, highway, and hills. i can still see the lake from my new roof, though, so i'm not that sad. 7:58 pm - 05.09.04 ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
