displaced teenagers in need of music, displaced animals in need of homes

this is several bits of information compiled into one
post. read the whole thing--

via thara:

if you give money to the hurricane relief, don't give
it to the red cross. i cancelled my donation
through amazon, and probably look like a jackass,
but i want as much as my money to go to the
victims. the red cross aren't even being let in to
help, and a lot of their money is spent to pay the
salaries of their administration (their CEO gets
something like $300,000/yr). katrina victims need
as much of the money to go directly to them as
possible, obviously, so give it to mercy corps,
where 92% of the donations go directly to the
people who need it:
http://www.mercycorps.org/

so, donate if you can, i'll avoid talking about the
government in this email, since some of you have
the eyes of big brother on you, but if you aren't
sickened, infuriated, and frightened by what has
happened & is still happening, i beg you to pull the
wool from your eyes. i'll send you links to articles
to assist you in wool-removal if you'd like, just ask.

Free Transport to Anywhere: Rooms Needed For
Katrina Animal Victims!

Transport Provided to Anywhere - Rooms
Desperately Needed! (For the Animal Victims of
Katrina) There is transportation provided, with
people ready and waiting, for upwards of 200 dogs
and 150 cats so far rescued from the devastation
of hurricane Katrina. What these animals need is a
place to go. Kennels, boarding, vets offices,
shelters with any extra space, foster homes and
rescues. Even one or two open kennels would
greatly help.

From what we know, all animals have been
vaccinated and are in good health considering the
conditions. There are dogs and cats of every breed
and
size. Some are in groups of two, three or four,
hailing from the same family, while some are
solitary. ANY KENNEL SPACE AVAILABLE CAN
CERTAINLY BE USED. These drivers are willing to
move these animals ANYWHERE they need to go.
Absolutely anywhere.

The current safe houses for these animals are
being inundated and some of these pets will have
to be euthanized if they are not moved to make
room for the incoming animals.

Please feel free to pass on this information
everywhere. Every forum, every list, every
community.
REMEMBER THESE ANIMALS WILL BE
TRANSPORTED TO YOU.

If you know anyone, anywhere, that is willing to
take in even one cat or dog, please have them
contact Lynda at the information provided below.
They are also asking for ANY kind of donations for
the animals - money, food, bedding, water, etc.

Please Contact Lynda V. at: 203 515 3024 (cell)

Please contact at any time, day or night. These
volunteers, rescuers and shelter workers are
working around the clock.
Thank you!

from kimya dawson:

"last week a bunch of hurricane survivors got
transferred to my school. there's so many! i have
like one in each of my classes. i was talking to a
girl from new orleans in government friday, and i
couldn't believe what she was saying. about 5 of
her friends have died, and here i was worried about
my algebra2 homework.
it makes you realize how much you have to be
thankful for."

you hear about the elderly and the sick and the
babies. but i hadn't really thought about displaced
teenagers. my teenage years were the hardest
years of my life and tthe years where my friends
and my possessions meant so so so much to me.
so i have an idea...but i am going to need help
because i am going to europe in a week.

now that so many of us have ipods, who has
discmen and walkmen and boomboxes and stereo
and cassettes and cds lying around that we don't
use anymore?

let's start a music donation program.

we all know music heals.

now, check this out. my friend sheila is in texas
and she has been volunteering at the astrodome.
she is willing to have cds, cassettes, walkmen,
portable cd players, boomboxes, and headphones
sent to her house. she will organize a team of kids
in her area to distribute these things to teenage
survivors of the hurricane who have been relocated
to the astrodome and transferred to schools down
there.

so please, go through your music collections and
your closets and find things that are collecting
dust. so many of us have upgraded our music
players and lost interest in things we used to listen
to. i think it would be okay to donate burned cds
and mixtapes too. ask your friends to donate stuff.
ask local stores to donate stuff. maybe you don't
have a cd player but maybe you could spare $10
to send a gift card. ask bands you know to donate
some of their albums. ask record labels to make
donations.

i can't imagine being a teenager and going through
tough times without my music.

and i am just imagining having my cat die without
listening to sting. or being too shy to talk to ed
without being able to listen to debbie gibson. or
being pissed off about having to clean my room
without having a suicidal tendencies cd to throw
stuff around to. or driving around aimlessly without
the violent femmes. or ending a fight with my
brother without blasting metallica.

imagine losing your home, all of your possessions,
and members of your family, some of your
friends...and just sitting in a strange place. being
told you can't go back AT LEAST for 2 months, but
maybe FOREVER.

it might help a little to put on some headphones
and escape.

so please help in any way you can. feel free to
donate money too. this way if sheila and her
friends meet anyone with a request for an album
they are desperate to own again they can go get
them a copy.
