novembre ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- telephone retail december 2004's list: best customer service calls (rated in reverse order for suspense) 6. a man placing an order for his wife's christmas present heard her come home and hid in the closet, where he whispered me the rest, his hand cupped over the receiver. 5. a librarian who ordered socks chatted my ear off about alums who went to my grad school and told me to get in touch with a toymaker. she then proceeded to give me a list of authors i should read and wished me happy holidays four times. 4. the lady with all the babies laughing in the background sung me a christmas carol in hungarian. her voice was like bells tinkling and we had the pants she wanted to order in stock, so she was even happier. 3. a lady who called earlier in the month and ordered a bunch of ski stuff (she had me measure pants and describe fabrics to her, and she understood my vocabulary: "this one is skritchy and it would make noise when you walk and your thighs would sweat but no snow would stick to your butt" and "this one is soft inside, some sort of brushed poly blend, and it feels like a little synthetic bunny") sent me a thank you card. i could not read her writing but i put the card up anyway. 2. the lady from wisconsin who proceeded to dictate recipes to me after i took her order. her name is laverne and i have to email her and tell her whether or not i liked the pasty, which is not a nipple covering a'la janet but rather some sort of meat pie concoction. oh laverne. 1. the georgian lady who loved it when i answered the phone in my mock british accent; she switched to one too and then we talked for twenty minutes about houses and proper ventilation. in mock british accents. i can't remember if she actually bought anything.
