this elongated weekend, i saw, i heard, we felt three of my closest friends giant plaster dinosaurs spiders climbing stubby aloe plants a candy wrapper wedged between overgrown weeds wrapping around a broken bench swing a dog that smelled like the ocean too many dirty feet license plates from florida, michigan, arizona long lines groups of friends who resembled each other melting everything firemen aiming their hoses at the sky and showering hundreds of people in the hundred degree heat six IHOPs and five del tacos lining various southern californian freeways a girl i knew once, up on a stage singing a thousand people fifty thousand people ticket scalpers sunburn ugly tattoos sweat a popular girl from high school dancing slowly in the swaying heat in the middle of a white tent filled with bass, water bottles and bare feet so many bands, snippets of sets, people wandering in and out of tents, people clapping people laying on the grass at midnight serenaded by radiohead robert smith in the same makeup he wore twenty years ago hugging and singing along to every song the pixies sang bow + guitar = pixies guitar solo a stolen continental breakfast shared with eleven people beck watching kraftwerk with a ten year old, we craned our necks but couldn't see kim deal fireworks fire a mechanical voice declaring i am a french robot wayne of the flaming lips walking over the crowd inside a giant plastic bubble search lights peaking in the sky holding hands, bouncing and dancing as badly as possible because the sun had set and we could finally breathe everything expanded as the air cooled, we held onto each other as we threaded through crowds and i made sure to stand next to tents, fences, or some sort of exit at all times
