novembre ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- as told to monument One of the members on one of the boards I take minutes for is a severely physically- and speech-disabled man named Comet*. He's extremely smart and grilled the mayor at the last meeting for not defending disability rights. Comet has this helmet with a sort of stick on it, a cursor or a wand of sorts, coming out from his forehead. He uses it as a finger, to steer his motorized wheelchair, turn pages, point. He had me interpret a statement to the mayor and it was the strangest, most urgent form of communication I've ever witnessed. He'd point the wand at words or letters on paper strapped to the desktop of his wheelchair, words like "I" and "can," "should," "jacket," etc. I'd write down what he gestured to so I could voice it correctly.
I noticed that day a bumper sticker slapped to the side of his wheelchair reading "they hate us because we're pretty." 2:08 pm - 02.19.04 ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
