typographer typographer, where are all your garamond lowercase a's?

Greetings to all of you in the Bay Area.

As you may have heard, TypeCon2004 will be presented in the San Francisco Bay Area next summer. TypeCon is the annual conference of The Society of Typographic Aficionados (SOTA), an international not-for-profit organization dedicated to the promotion, study, and support of type design, typography, and the related arts.

The sixth annual TypeCon will feature hands-on workshops, presentations, and panel discussions, as well as special events, and an international exhibition of typography, graphic design, lettering, and other art.

Our most recent conference was held a few weeks ago in Minneapolis, and was a great success. Over 70 speakers and workshop leaders took part, with more than 300 attendees coming from all over North America, South America, Europe, and Australasia.

We are excited about bringing TypeCon to the Bay Area. We will draw speakers and attendees from all over the world, but, more importantly, we will work with many local partners, speakers, and teachers, and attract a healthy percentage of local attendees. In addition to working with Bay Area typographers, we hope to involve your thriving lettering and book arts communities, technology and new media specialists, historians, educators, and others.

Each year, we look to local residents to help plan a program that is rich in content, and that showcases the regional culture. Heading up the site committee are Mike Kohnke (Typebox / We Associated, Oakland) and Joachim Mller-Lanc (Typebox / Kame Design, San Francisco). We are also looking forward to working with Steve Woodall and our friends at the San Francisco Center for the Book.

It takes many volunteers to create a successful conference, and I would like to invite you to participate in any way possible.

We will hold the first TypeCon2004 planning meeting on Tuesday, August 12. I hope you will be able to attend this brainstorming session.
