novembre ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- she opened her arms wide and heavily enunciated the word "ale" living in a bubble, part one friday night kissy and i saw jeanine garofolo's stand up routine at the warfield in san francisco. second row, houselights up halfway so she could see our responses to her jokes. i kept biting my nails because i've never before sat in a metal folding chair with no elbow room for three hours staring at someone talking about alcoholism and politics. and i think she noticed once or twice. i was in the second row. how could she not? saturday morning i was walking up market to the bart station and a man with a badly-healed broken nose followed my strides, talking to me, telling me to stop, asking me if i would participate in a survey that would take two minutes. i took a step away to regain personal space and explained that i had to get back to oakland, that i was late. i smiled and pointed at the bart station. he rolled his eyes and hissed, "you've missed your stop, dear," very condescending-like. well, sir. perhaps i can understand how you got that broken nose. your off-putting demeanor rattled me so much that i sat on the bart train frowning and had to focus all my attention on a leftover newspaper.
