novembre ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- plastic, frosting, heat and red underwear worn over blue tights bianca and chandra and i were wandering around at toys'r'us today, looking for appropriate birthday gifts for the newly two-year-old hazel. bent on avoiding a stern mother who snapped at her entourage of children, we ducked into an electronics section and were met with dozens of cell phones. i was aghast. when did they start selling this shit at toys'r'us? (the last time i was in a chain toy store was 1998, and it was to take pictures at a neoprint machine in the front of the store, away from its isles and isles of badly made plastic dreams.) bianca shrugged. two year olds are advanced these days. hazel ripped through her gifts after potato and pesto pizza. she ignored the necessities like socks and vhs cassettes and concentrated on pushing one button on one toy for minutes on end. after a while, chandra noticed that she kept pushing "six" on her new blues clues telephone. she's calling satan! why? satan didn't give her a gift. he totally ignored her birthday. superman played on the largest television screen (didn't the actress who played lois lane go crazy after this movie? i heard she ended up in someone's yard shouting THEY'RE AFTER ME a week after disappearing en route to a dinner party) and pink triple decker cake made its rounds. hazel zeroed in on cups of ice and bows ripped off her unwrapped gifts. the dog kept licking my hand. ants invaded the bathroom. after a while, hyper on sugar, hazel bounced around outside, inspecting car bumpers and divots in the lawn. i got inside a large orange tube made out of tent material and waltzed around the yard while bianca took pictures of all of us and of everything. you know you want lots of babies now. yeah, i'm gonna go adopt some tomorrow. some? i'm gonna pick me up a six pack of babies on the way home from work tomorrow. 12:50 am - 08.11.02 ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
